135,000 People Affected by Data Breach, U.S. Dental Institution Reaches Class Action SettlementIssuing time:2026-08-26 11:21
DentalGoodNews|On August 24, 2026, local time, Community Dental Care (CDC, not the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), a nonprofit dental service provider in Minnesota, agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit involving a Data Breach affecting 134,903 patients. Affected individuals may submit claims through official channels before October 19, 2026. The settlement stems from a cyberattack on CDC's systems that occurred in December 2024. The investigation revealed that an unauthorized third party obtained highly sensitive patient information around December 6, 2024, including names, addresses, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), medical records, and health insurance details. According to official disclosures, CDC detected system anomalies on December 20, 2024, and initiated an investigation, engaging third-party cybersecurity experts to determine the scope of the incident. The investigation was completed on March 24, 2025, after which CDC issued notifications to affected individuals and relevant regulatory agencies. Under the terms of the settlement agreement, eligible class members will receive multiple compensation options. Among these, affected individuals who cannot prove actual losses may apply for a base cash payment of $50; while individuals who can demonstrate out-of-pocket losses resulting from the Data Breach, such as identity theft, credit monitoring fees, or document replacement costs, may apply for compensation of up to $5,000. Additionally, all affected patients will receive two years of medical and credit monitoring services provided by CyEx Medical Shield, including $1 million in medical identity theft insurance. In its statement, the company denied allegations of failing to provide adequate data protection but agreed to the settlement to avoid the costs and uncertainties of further litigation. As of now, the relevant court has preliminarily approved the settlement, with the final hearing scheduled for November 23, 2026. About CDC: Officially operating as a nonprofit since 2005, CDC is one of the largest nonprofit Medicaid dental service providers in Minnesota, operating 5 clinics across the state, providing more than 126,000 patient visits annually, employing over 300 staff, and serving more than 70 counties statewide. It primarily serves low-income populations, new immigrants, and other communities with insufficient oral healthcare resources, offering comprehensive oral medical services including preventive, restorative, pediatric dentistry, and emergency care.
