DentalGoodNews | On March 29, Bernama, the Malaysian National News Agency, reported that the Faculty of Dentistry at Universiti Malaya has been officially awarded the "Centre of Dental Education" accreditation by the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England) in London, becoming the first institution globally to receive this certification. The Royal College of Surgeons of England (RCS England): It is one of the world's oldest and most influential professional academic institutions in surgery, long involved in setting surgical training and practice standards for the UK and Commonwealth nations. The MRCS and FRCS examinations it leads (jointly implemented with the other three major surgical colleges in the UK and Ireland) are crucial milestones for surgeons entering advanced specialist training and completing specialist certification, forming a core component of the surgical career pathway in the Commonwealth. Globally, this system operates multiple international examination centers, including in Asia, making it one of the most widely accessible international surgical qualification systems for Asian surgeons. According to Bernama, the accreditation ceremony was held during the Diplomate Ceremony in London. Dr. Charlotte Eckhardt, Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery at RCS England, presented the accreditation to Professor Zamri Radzi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Malaya, and Professor Firdaus Hariri, Dean of the Faculty of Dentistry at Universiti Malaya. Universiti Malaya stated that this certification demonstrates the university's commitment to meeting international benchmarks in education, research, and clinical training. Public information shows that Universiti Malaya, founded in 1905 (originally the King Edward VII College of Medicine), is Malaysia's oldest and highest internationally ranked public research university, located in the capital, Kuala Lumpur. This accreditation covers eight doctoral programs at the Faculty of Dentistry, including Orthodontics, Paediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Periodontal Disease, and Dental Public Health. Bernama noted in its report that the RCS England accreditation is awarded to higher education institutions that demonstrate excellence in surgery-related education, thereby fostering collaboration and ensuring the continued maintenance of high standards in surgical and dental education and training. It also opens doors for in-depth cooperation between the parties in academic exchange, clinical training, and research innovation. According to previous reports by DGN, regional giants such as Q & M Dental Group (Singapore) Limited have been continuously expanding their presence in the Malaysian market in recent years, reflecting the increased activity and demand for specialization in the region's oral healthcare market.
